- Christianity came to Singapore with the founding of Singapore as a British Colony by Sir Stamford Raffles in 1819.
- As per the 2010 census, Christians are the fastest growing religious group in Singapore. A significant number of ethnic Chinese Buddhists have converted to Christianity.
St Andrew’s Cathedral, Singapore

St Andrew’s Cathedral is the largest Cathedral in Singapore. St Andrew’s is Singapore’s oldest Anglican Church and the main church of the Anglican Diocese of Singapore. It was named after the patron saint of Scotland, because the original church was funded by Scottish traders. Singapore’s St Andrew’s Cathedral is a shining example of the beautiful British colonial and Neo-Gothic architecture. It has an impressive tower, a tall spire and exquisite stain glass. Construction of the original church started in 1835 and it has been demolished and rebuilt twice. The current St Andrew’s Cathedral started service in 1861. St Andrew’s Cathedral is a gazette National Monument.
Saint Joseph’s Church, Singapore

Saint Joseph’s Church is a beautiful Gothic style Church, located in Singapore’s Central Business District. The stand-out features of Saint Joseph’s Church are the central octagonal tower with a dome on top, 2 smaller octagonal towers, stained glass, tall arched windows and wonderful statues. Singapore’s Saint Joseph’s Church is famous for its Good Friday and Easter celebrations. Built by the Portuguese Mission, St Joseph’s Church opened for service in 1912. It was built on the site of another Portuguese Church – “Church of São José”. Saint Joseph’s Church is a gazetted national monument. Cathedral of the Good Sheppard is located nearby.
Armenian Church, Singapore
Completed in 1835, Armenian Church of Saint Gregory the Illuminator is the oldest Christian Church in Singapore. As the name suggest, Singapore’s Armenian Church has influences of Armenian Church architecture, along with British neoclassical style. Striking features of the Armenian Church include the impressive front portico supported on large columns, a tall spire, and a beautiful garden. Singapore’s Armenian Community was influential in the 19th century. Armenian Church has been declared a National Monument.
Cathedral of the Good Shepherd, Singapore
Cathedral of the Good Shepherd is a Roman Catholic Church, and is the main Cathedral Church of the Archdiocese of Singapore. Architecturally, the church is based on Renaissance style and it is influenced by three London churches – St Paul’s, Covent Garden Church and St Martin-in-the-Fields. Key features of Cathedral of the Good Shepherd are an impressive portico entrance, 3 bells in the steeple of the church, concave ornamental ceiling and two piped organs. The Cathedral is closed till 2015 for major renovation work.
Church of St Teresa, Singapore

Singapore’s Church of St Teresa is a charming neo-Byzantine style Catholic Church, which is influenced by the famous Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Montmartre, Paris. The beautiful Church of Saint Teresa has a large dome and two smaller domes on towers. Initial funding for the church was provided by French missionaries. A monastery and school (St Teresa’s High School) are located near the Church of St Teresa.
Church of the Holy Family, Singapore

Singapore’s Church of the Holy Family is a Roman Catholic Church. On the outside the church has a lovely sloping roof which depicts hands praying. Inside the church, there is a stunning 16 panel round stain glass window behind the altar. Each of the 16 glasses depicts a scene from Jesus Christ’s life. Church of the Holy Family has among the largest parishes in Singapore. The original church was founded in 1902. The old church was demolished and rebuilt; the new 4 storey Church of the Holy Family started service in 1999. In addition to the main Prayer Hall, the Church also has a Kindergarten, classrooms, a large room, choir room, a 200 capacity car park and a columbarium in the basement. In addition to the main Church, there are 3 more buildings within The Church of the Holy Family complex.
Church of Our Lady of Lourdes, Singapore

Singapore’s Church of Our Lady of Lourdes is an impressive neo-Gothic Catholic Church, which is modelled on the Lourdes (France) church with the same name. Inside the Church is a grotto (cave) with statues of Our Lady appearing to Saint Bernadette. Opened in 1888, Church of Our Lady of Lourdes is the first Tamil Catholic church in Singapore. It bears a resemblance to “San Thome Basilica” in Chennai, which was also built around the same time (1893). In addition to English, the Church also has mass service in Tamil and sometimes in Singhalese.
Church of the Holy Trinity, Singapore

Located in East Singapore, Church of the Holy Trinity has the largest Christian parish in Singapore. This popular three storied Roman Catholic Church is shaped like an angelfish. In addition to the main Church, the Church of the Holy Trinity also has 16 activity rooms, a canteen, a book shop, a parish hall and administrative offices. Unlike most other Churches in Singapore, the image of Jesus Christ behind the altar is of the “Risen Christ” and not of the “Crucified Christ”. The Church of the Holy Trinity has strong links with the local community.
Church of the Sacred Heart, Singapore
Singapore’s Church of the Sacred Heart consists of 3 buildings – the main church, a seven and a half storied Community Building and a three storey Parish Welfare Hall. The tall 7.5 storey Church of the Sacred Heart building has church offices, a cafeteria, prayer rooms and a car park on one floor. Church of the Sacred Heart was originally built in 1910 to cater to the Cantonese Catholic community of Singapore. In addition to English, the Church of the Sacred Heart also offers its parishioners Sunday Mass Service in Mandarin.
Church of Saints Peter and Paul, Singapore

Church of St Peter and St Paul was built between 1869 to 1870 by the Chinese Catholic Mission and the Indian community. Later this Church catered to mainly the Chinese Catholic community in Singapore. Most mass services at the Church of Saints Peter and Paul are held in English; in addition there are special Mandarin and Cantonese mass services on Sundays.
